Start practicing your British accent because today we are taking a culinary trip to England! We are making a lovely pie that combines ground beef, earthy herbs, and tempting cheese to give you that complete comfort food feel. This low carb pie is perfectly spiced, thick and hearty, yet unbelievably easy to make! If you are hosting a dinner party or planning a picnic, you can even make individual mini pies and serve them hot from the oven in their ramekins. I’m sure The Queen herself would approve!
Why This Savory Keto Pie Is A Must Try!
This keto pie is just as crave-worthy as a traditional mince pie, if not more! It’s a delicious way to reinvent a classic. It’s got all the goods you’d expect in a traditional minced meat pie – a double cheese topping, well-seasoned beef and a delicious, thick crust!
This recipe makes 6 servings. Now, it's super tempting to eat more than one slice, but please do try to control yourself unless you're only eating one meal a day. In that case, munching down a couple of keto pie slices is okay.
Each serving contains a hefty 570 calories, 36.9g of fat, 47.0g of protein, and 8g of net carbs. A single slice will fill you up properly, so it's perfect for eating at breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Preheat the oven to 175°C. Heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion and garlic for 4-5 minutes until tender.
Add the ground beef to the pan, stir well, and season with the oregano, salt, and pepper.
Pour in the tomato paste and the water. Lower heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes.
In the meantime, make the crust by combining all the crust ingredients in a food processor or blender to get a dough. Alternatively, you can also mix all the ingredients by hand. You can use a fork or a spatula to do this.
Line and grease a 23-25 cm pie pan.
Press the dough into the pan and up along the sides. Then use a fork to poke holes in the bottom to allow hot steam to escape and prevent the crust from puffing up later.
Bake the crust for 10-15 minutes.
Remove crust from the oven and fill with the beef mixture.
Layer the cottage cheese and shredded Gouda cheese on top of the pie, and return to the oven.
Bake on the lowest rack for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
Serve warm.

What’s the best type of ground beef to use?
Lean ground beef (85/15) is just right in my opinion. It’s got just the right amount of fat, it absorbs all the flavors perfectly and makes the pie extra yummy. I won’t recommend extra lean ground beef (90/10) as it’s got a tendency to turn out a bit dry.
Can you save some for later?
Yes, of course, one serving of this low carb minced meat pie is very filling, so you should definitely save some for later! If you live alone, you can put the entire pie or the leftovers in the fridge. It will hold up pretty well for up to 5 days.
If you intend to eat one slice per week, then freezing it is the best option as it will keep there for up to 3 months. Note that the pie must be cooled down thoroughly before putting in the freezer, otherwise, you’ll end up with soggy slices. Wrap each individual slice with parchment paper and put in a freezer-safe container.
When you’re ready to eat, don’t pop it straight into the microwave. Instead, let it thaw overnight in the fridge. Alternatively, you can also heat the pie in the oven at low temperature.
What to serve with your keto pie?
Since you’re getting a load of fat and protein for this dish, a side of vegetables is always a good idea. Steamed broccoli, sauteed cauliflower, or a salad made of your favorite greens is perfect.
If you eat a slice for breakfast, then black coffee or plain tea is a good idea. I would avoid adding more fat to either beverage since the pie itself is pretty high fat already. If you eat the pie for lunch or dinner, try pairing it with a glass of keto chai tea latte. A serving only contains 140 calories, 14.4g fat, 1.4g protein, and 2g net carbs, so it should fit your macros perfectly!
Other ingredients to try out for your keto pie
This keto meat pie is extremely versatile. You can use the same ingredients for the crust and just swap out the filling and topping with your favorite ingredients. If you’re not a fan of the crust, you can switch out the ingredients. Or you can just totally forego the crust and make a crustless keto pie instead! That said, here are some suggestions to consider:
Meat filling
It doesn’t always need to be ground beef. You can change up your meat filling to pork, chicken, turkey, lamb, or venison. Even good, old bacon is a tasty alternative for our minced meat pie filling!
Toppings replacement
For this recipe, we used cottage and gouda cheese. But mozzarella and cheddar will work just as well. You can also try using Emmental and parmesan cheese for the toppings.
Other options
The recipe calls for cooking beef in water, tomato paste, and spices. But instead of water, you can use beef broth for a richer flavor. If you have neither time nor patience to make the broth from scratch, a bouillon cube will do.
Also, feel free to use your favorite herbs and spices to season the meat. You probably have some basil, rosemary, thyme, and pepper in your kitchen so you can use these as well. Italian seasoning is another suggestion. And for a milder, sweeter flavor, try cooking the meat in a tablespoon of coconut aminos.
Conclusion
Keto pie with minced meat is the favorite comfort food of many people, especially Britons. Our low carb recipe allows you to enjoy a traditional, well-loved dish that’s been around for centuries. Try making one today and let us know if you enjoy it as much as we do!
